Meet Omar - The East Ender

Born and Raised in East London - Family History:

Omar Faruk was born in the Royal London Hospital, East End of London.

His father the late Mr Abdus Sabur, was a shopkeeper, poet and politician, came to England in the 1960s from Bhadeshwar, Golapjonj, Sylhet, Bangladesh.

His father was ardent supporter of independence and confident of Moulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, served as general secretary of National Awami Party.

The family lived at Royal Mint Square moving to a council flat at Christian Street, E1.

Journey Through Education:

Together with his younger sister and three brothers, Omar attended Harry Gosling Primary School at Henrique’s Street, moving to Raines Foundation Church of England Secondary School in Bethnal Green.

He was the first in the family to go to university reading Chemistry and simultaneously completed a two-year part time access to law course at Tower Hamlets College in one year.

He read LLB (Hons) Law, then Bar Vocational Course at the Inns of Court School of Law. Omar speaks fluent Sylheti, Bangla and classical Arabic.
